About John

April 30th, 2009

John CritchleyJohn has over ten years of experience designing and delivering information technology solutions to the telecoms, financial services, public services and FMCG industry groups.

The focus of John’s interest and delivery has been in:

  • Interactive media systems and product development (Web, TV, mobile and CD)
  • Business systems integration (including process design)
  • Enterprise architecture and IT governance.

The range of his industry experience include:

  • Technology design and implementation for three major telecom operators across the UK, Europe and Australia, to support the development of products in Digital TV, ISP broadband and 3G
  • Management consulting with one of the Big Four, providing technology advisory services to financial services clients, rail and road tolling public service agencies, and a water utility agency
  • Professional services for an integration middleware vendor, designing and implementing integration solutions for FMCG and records processing outsourcer.

John has a 2.1 BSc (Hon) degree (Chemistry), followed up by three years of research into catalytic chemistry.

After deciding to pursue a career in IT, John acquired training and qualifications in systems analysis and design (ISEB diploma, Business Systems Development) and technology project management. His work with two global management consultancies have also armed him with structured problem solving and a consulting approach to his professional engagements.

John is experienced in, or intimately familiar with, a range of methods and tools that support his professional work:

  • Architecture methods and frameworks (SSADM, TOGAF, UML, Zachmann framework)
  • Project management methodologies (PRINCE2 and Kepner-Tregoe)
  • Systems integration frameworks (SOA, Web services, SOAP, etc.)
  • Web application implementation environments (PHP, Perl, Java, J2EE, Ruby, Rails, ASP, etc.)
  • Systems infrastructure (network design and integration, security and access management, etc.)
  • Data design and management (modelling, security, services, integration, etc.)
  • IT governance (COBIT, TOGAF, ITGI).

John is particularly driven by an interest in finding pragmatic and cost-effective solutions through the use of technology. He strongly believes in the architect’s end-to-end responsibility for solution outcome, which has been reflected in the quality of his work.

John has been an active member of the developing technology architecture community, publishing his own blogs (SolutionArchitecture.org and JohnCritchley.com) and is a member of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) and the British Computer Society (BCS).
